Jamaica reggae star Sizzla repeats gay murder music

Jamaican reggae star Sizzla has again called for gays to be killed at a concert where he praised imprisoned fellow star Buju Banton.

His remarks and performance are a further breach of the Reggae Compassionate Act, intended to stop homophobia among leading reggae stars, which he signed in June 2007.

The Jamaica Gleaner reports today (20 March) that Sizzla took to the stage again on Sunday (18 March) at Club Privilege, New Kingston having fully recovered from a bike accident last year.

The event was a fundraiser for the Sizzla Youth Foundation which he developed to ‘train and develop the youth, not just in Jamaica but worldwide’.

But he took the opportunity to ‘bun out’ men wearing tight pants, shaving eyebrows, and those wearing their pants below their waists, according to the Gleaner.

He also gave a shout out to Buju Banton, currently imprisoned on drugs charges who was also investigated for a gay-bashing attack but cleared due to lack of evidence.

And he went on to perform a mash-up including Banton’s 1988 song Boom Bye Bye which incites the murder of gay men – ‘boom bye bye’ represents the sounds of gunshots.

‘Bun mi a bun fire now,’ he said, before doing a mix of Free Me and Boom Bye Bye. (‘Bun’ is slang for burn.)

Sizzla signed the Reggae Compassionate Act (RCA) in 2007, under his real name Miguel Collins, which called for reggae to return to its ‘One love’ roots, reject homophobia and respect everyone regardless of sexual orientation.

Peter Tatchell, one of the activists behind the Stop Murder Music campaign which led to several stars signing the act, told Gay Star News: ‘He promised to stop performing homophobic songs and making homophobic public statements.

‘Soon after he signed the RCA, Sizzla denied signing it and he has continued to perform “murder music” that incites hatred and violence against LGBT people.

‘He can’t be trusted. He’s gone back on his word so many times. This is just the latest example. The Stop Murder Music campaign is working to get his concerts cancelled.’
